Back onboard after vacation

Tuesday 7 August: Boothbay Harbor, Maine
So ends Cloudy Bay’s 3 week holiday in Boothbay Harbor, while her owners left for a 3 week trip to Europe. 6000 miles, 19 individual legs, and not a sail torn or storm encountered. But we did have to negotiate late busses, left luggage receptionists taking an 1 hour tea break, red hot underground in London, the usual Ryanair sheep lines, Europcar who wanted £18,000 excess deposit on our compact rental car and many of the other usual mass-transport challenges! Most of the dramas being in the U.K. US and Romania services were, as usual, impeccable. God help U.K. post Brexit!
We had a full agenda catching up with family and friends, and we were also both fully serviced medically. Tests are good, teeth are clean and filled, all ready for another healthy 6-8 months on board.
Last night we arrived back to Boston Logan airport direct from Stansted and stayed in a very clean and well setup AirBnB. Just what did we do before Uber and AirBnB? This morning we have a 4 hour bus to Wiscasette, then taxi to Boothbay. We were looking forward to some cooler weather, but it’s as hot and humid here as in Europe.
During the taxi ride we made a detour to Marine Parts Express to pick up a large volume of Volvo parts and oil. Enough for the next 10 200 hour services. This on-line company was very professional with our order, so we were a little surprised to find it housed in a tatty old barn in the middle of nowhere, filled to the brim with rickety shelves of engine parts. 7 more large boxes in the taxi and it was full!
Back at the boat yard we opted to leave our engine parts ashore and come collect them in the dinghy tomorrow. Once on board Cloudy we open the hatches and get fresh air through. The vents had been open but still she smelt musty.
When we departed we left the generator on auto-run 1/2 hour per day. But after 5 days the yard reported it was no longer running. Luckily the solar panels kept up with the drain of the fridges, just. Now back on board Glen starts investigating. The control panel has all sorts of odd messages never seen before and sure enough the generator won’t start. So within minutes of getting aboard, Cloudy Bay is already craving for attention and Glen is in the engine room taking things apart whilst Oana packs away our luggage.
For some reason there is a lot of condensation in the engine room, not least around the fuses of the generator. Taking off the panel it’s clear there had been arcing and the whole circuit board is both blackened and damp. Clearly Cloudy Bay is protesting at this damp climate that she has never been used to!
We run the main engine for an hour to warm up the room then set to cleaning the circuit board and terminals. In the now very warm environment the electrical cleaner can evaporate without causing yet more moisture. Finally the big test, will it start? Fingers crossed we initiate the start sequence, and it starts first time. Phew!!! Onto to shopping list goes a spare card for the generator. We had just finally purchased all items on our long shopping list, and already the new list is starting. No doubt a new circuit board will be about 1/2 the cost of a new generator! Grrrr!
By 9pm (2am UK time) we are shattered and roll into bed and gentle movement sends us to sleep. We are back!
