Welcome to Gibraltar

Glen has joined the PYD crew for the delivery of Cloudy Bay from Lanzarote to Gibraltar, her new home.

Before leaving Dubai, Glen was commenting “I haven’t been sailing out in the Atlantic since I was 19! And then it was trailing log, DR, compass, sextant and wind-vane steering. Can’t wait to see what has changed!”. I can tell upfront what has changed: Glen’s eyesight (he packed 3 reading glasses) and sleeping habits (he bought seasickness pills). And with regards to technology, I guess I’ll hear all about it at his return.

With that in mind, I kept an eye on the boat delivery progress by tracking the AIS signal on several iPhone apps and webpages. Haven’t made up my mind which app is better; when one was failing to track the AIS, another one would pick up. So further research on accuracy of vessel tracking software will be in order.

Passage was a lot faster than expected (3 days and 16 hours), with average speed of 6.08 knots, maximum speed 10.5 knots. Some motoring here and there, but overall a great sailing experience. Very happy with Cloudy’s effortless performance and with the great crew from PYD, perfect balance of professionalism and humor.

Now Cloudy Bay is again tied up, resting in Queensway Quay Marina, Gibraltar.
