Friday 3 Apr, CY day 20: In the spirit of “working from home”, our office moves into the cockpit.
Compared to the last few days, which have been very windless and hot, this morning we wake to cloudy sky and a nice cooling easterly breeze. It’s so refreshing that we bring the “office” (our 2 PCs) up into the cockpit. Oana continues with video editing while I continue with uploading, the write ups, answering comments on the vlog & blog and chatting with friends.
A newly wed friend of my son, Martin, has taken 2 years off work and along with his wife is sailing their Moody 346 around the world. They crossed the Atlantic with the ARC and are now in Antigua. Sadly, it looks like they will now have to cancel their whole adventure and sail back to UK. This is because the Panama Canal is now closed to small craft and the same with all the Pacific islands. Poor them. We have also heard of several other cruisers who are having to do a similar u-turn and sail back to Europe ahead of planned return time. It seems there will be so many consequences of this virus, both at a macro and micro level 🙁
News from ashore today: 1 new positive test to report, bringing the total to 29. Still a low number and still apparently under control. But for how long? They also announce the new curfew rules. All nights continue to be hard curfew (total lock down 7pm-5am). And for the days: everyone will be allowed to be out to do essential business like shopping, go to pharmacy or gas station for just 3 days of the week. Our days (by surname initial) will be Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Sunday is total lockdown for everyone. And fines for breaking the curfew are an eye watering $3000 per offense. Plus, police can now issue fines on the spot if they find a breach of either the shelter in place order during day or of the hard curfew at night.
So tomorrow we must head to supermarket, otherwise our next round for fresh produce is not till Tuesday next week.
This confinement onboard seems to have altered our sleeping routine too. With all the reading in the evening we again go to bed after 1am.
