Start dinghy cover project

Tuesday 28 Apr, KY day 45: Dinghy on the deck for templating, and in the evening it’s desparate times: we hack into the BBC.

Windy again today. So sunshade off again. We feel like we can put it on and take it off with our eyes closed these days! Then it’s off to the supermarket. No queue today, we are straight in. We make an inquiry at the pharmacy on face masks. They have some today! But they are the disposable type, pretty much the same as the throw away painting masks we have on board, only they are selling for $18 a pair! Someone is making oodles of money out of PPE these days. Of that I’m certain.

Shopping is quick and soon we are back on Cloudy. I then take a tootle in the dinghy around the other yachts to see what they are up to. The British Amel is still wanting to get to Trinidad but no plans to depart yet. One Dutch yacht, Asha, is about to head off to Curacao tomorrow where they will haul out and fly back to The Netherlands. The other Dutch boat, Argonaut, is wanting to leave back across the Atlantic to The Netherlands, but first they need to fix their autohelm. Yes, that would be a useful piece of equipment to have working on a passage like that with just a couple on board!

Today we lift the dinghy onto the foredeck. So engine off and all the gear out of the fore locker. Oooph, did we really have that much stowed in the dinghy?! Soon it’s sitting nicely on 2 foam chocks and work on patterning the tube covers begins. First though, I watch the SailRite video on making dinghy “chaps”. Not sure why they are called chaps, but the video is very informative. Lesson 1, let some air out the dinghy before making the patterns. By sun-down we have one tube (and extrusions) patterned.

Good news from the shore today. No new positive Covid cases. Other interesting news: yesterday a media person asked the health minister to comment on whether it’s true his wife had received a personal trainer into their home on Sunday – Sundays being a hard curfew day. (apparently she’s been silly enough to post it on Face Book!). The answer she got was a very rude rebuke from the health minister. He didn’t even try to deny or apologies for this unlawful curfew event. Well, today, surprisingly, the Premier stood up for his health minister saying it was his wife that had broken the rules, not the minister himself. Needless to say there was a lot of action on social media about the whole affair. It was the talk of the town all day, and likely for a few more too!

Talking of breaking the rules, in the evening we decide to do something different for a change. Using our VPN connection we manage to get into BBC iPlayer (psss, don’t tell the BBC! It’s only supposed to be accessible from within the UK. Well, I count Cayman as UK, so should be alright!). Using our good WiFi connection, we avidly watch 3 episodes of Killing Eve, series 3. It was really nice entertainment. But now we have to wait a week for episode 4. Damn!
