    New Year’s Day

    by Oana January 1, 2019
    written by Oana

Tuesday 1 January 2019, St. Kitts, Salt Plage: A lazy day at anchor, pottering, varnishing, and Glen’s periodic blood donation to the decks.

We wake up appropriately late for the 1st of January, especially considering our middle of the night excitement! We vow to have a peaceful day and defer trying to hire a car until tomorrow.

The sky is not so clear today and the wind is really swirling in the anchorage. One minute zero wind, the next a huge gust at 90deg to the previous one. All the boats in the anchorage seem to be pointing in different directions! Luckily there is lots of space between us.
Interestingly ALL the super yachts have left before we even woke up. But as we have breakfast 4 new ones arrive almost at the same time and anchor downwind of us. What appeals to a super yacht in this anchorage we are really not sure. Maybe it’s just the only piece of calm and well sheltered water in the surrounding islands?

The only drama of the day was Glen stepping on an aft locker finger handle which was left open. Left open by who? … yes, well guessed :). So he cut his toe, and left the usual trail of blood for yours truly to clean up. Is blood good for the decks, I wonder?
I also really wonder just how he managed to reach his mid 50s apparently unscathed! He says his body had elite training in the self healing department! Take the last 12 hours for example: he walked into a rusty iron post in the beach club trying to take a short cut to the gents; then he came home with 2 parallel scratches above his eye brow from goodness knows where; and now a partially severed toe. Oooph!

Our morning sees us pottering. Mostly related to the vlog. We are trying to upload the next video – visit to Antigua. Now that we are uploading at full 4K resolution it takes a loooong time. This one is 9GB and it’s been uploading all night. But by mid morning it suddenly starts uploading at a super fast speed never seen before. Hurry! And the video is published. But after 600 views in the first hour we start receiving comments that the video is loaded at 360p resolution only, which is terrible. Damn. So we delete that video (sorry guys!) and go back to start the upload again. (uploaded three times, still 360p – so we keep it on private till YouTube will sort it out and have the full HD option available).
While we enjoy keeping the blog and vlog (at the moment!) it does sometimes feel like the tail is wagging the dog (..starting to rule us!). And going forward, lack of good internet (or any internet) will be our biggest challenge with these high resolution videos.

The lazy day continues. I work on the next video, Montserrat, trying to keep up to date. Glen is outside having a snorkel around the bay and he comes back saying there are lots of stingrays and star fish hanging around on the bottom.
Then he starts sanding the new wood plugs on the coach roof hand rails and applying 2 coats of Coelan before the sun goes down. This stuff was difficult enough to put on in the winter temperatures in Spain. Here, with the strong warm wind, it starts to cure within 1-2 brush strokes! But he is glad to get the wood sealed back up again.

What a lazy day, the dinghy didn’t even leave its davits! Well, a perfectly relaxed bank holiday, actually. Tomorrow we go back to work 🙂

Saturday 29 December: A rather disturbed night then a fast sail to Nevis, via Redonda. If previous night we didn’t get much sleep due to the swell, last night wins the prize…

About us

Sail Cloudy Bay

Hi there! We are Glen & Oana, restless spirits with travel and adventure in our hearts. In mid-2016 we decided to put an end to our working days, and travel the world. And what better way to do it, if not sailing! We are aspiring to complete a circumnavigation, and this is our blog where we try to keep a record of our adventures. We live on s/v Cloudy Bay (and sometimes in Bucharest), have a long list of places to sail to, and we like coffee and good cocktails.
