Thur 8-Jan: This morning the electrical systems are ganging up on Glen. First, after starting the generator, the 2nd charger won’t kick-in automatically again, and it takes a manual reset to get it going. Then, after 40 mins the generator shuts down due to “water over temp”. In the engine room the cooling system is steaming into the header tank – just like you used to see cars over heating on the side of the road with steam coming out of the engine! The raw water cooling seems OK but Glen changes the impeller anyway. Then running again it’s all OK for 30 min until the batteries recharge is complete. Glen suspects the thermostat to be the problem. We’ll see what happens tomorrow, when we recharge again.
The rest of the morning we are pampered in a local hair salon. I have hair coloring and Glen a trim. We feel like humans again!
Then it’s back to “scrap yard” where they rent cars. Soon we are off in a 2-door Toyota Rav4 that has definitely seen better days! We head across the middle of the island through dense tropical rain forest towards Grenville on the east coast. On the way we stop off at the Grand Etang – a freshwater lake in the old volcanic crater, at 2,500ft altitude. Lovely and cool up there.
Grenville, the 2nd largest town on Grenada, is a very local fishing town and as tourists we definitely feel out of place. The streets are busy with people and school children, all going about their business.
From Grenville we head back south down the east coast. The road runs high above the seashore with little evidence of any communities close to the sea. Finally, google maps shows us a road that leads down to a beach. As we get closer to the sea the dwellings thin out to nothing until we reach a deserted wild beach where the Atlantic swell is crashing over the reef offshore. Other than driftwood, the beach is totally deserted. Makes you think how it would have been for the first explorers to have found the place. Beach and river leading into a dense jungle occupied by cannibals…. brave people they were.
Before heading back to the boat we indulge in a meal at Dodgy Dick restaurant again. Compared to other restaurants it’s good value for money. We aim for an early night, so that we can utilize the rental car to the max tomorrow.
