Mount Desert Island, day 3 – travel arrangements

by Oana

Wednesday 11 Jul: Eastern Bay – planning a trip to Europe to visit family and friends.
Life onboard without phone and internet is not easy. Even more so, when we are in civilization, with phone and paid internet, and none of it works. We want to plan a trip to Europe relatively soon, and looking up flights or mooring for the boat is impossible without communication.
Luckily, Fiona offered her house, phone line and internet to us while they are all at work. So this morning we installed ourselves at their home geared up with all our gadgets. Good internet, bliss!
Planning the trip is not easy, as finding a place to moor the boat in a safe harbor and reasonably priced proved to be more of a challenge than we thought. Lots of emails and phone calls later, we manage to narrow down options for long term mooring, and dates for flights, so we are clearly making headway. What a relief… this planning proved to be the most stressful task we had in a while!
By 5pm we are done with flights. We are hungry and pooped from looking at the laptop screen all day. So we retire to Cloudy Bay for a very late lunch and to catch our breath a bit.
Early evening, Fiona and Theo are paying us a visit on Cloudy Bay and we have a relaxing chat with them over a beer. During which we learn more interesting facts about their mussels farming. It’s great to catch up on our lives stories. We watch an amazing sunset over mirror like water and dead quiet surroundings. Wonderful place to anchor and sleep.
Late evening we want to relax watching a movie, and we choose ‘Get out’ from our limited collection. Oana was convinced it will be a chilled comedy, but turned out to be a chilling the bones spooky movie, ironically set in a lonely house in a forest … just like Fiona’s. Hope Oana is not going to have nightmares tonight!
The sky is very stary, and for the first time ever we see the stars visible right down to the horizon and reflecting on the mirror-calm water. It’s breathtaking. And when we stir up the sea a bit, the plankton’s phosphorescence is so bright, like thousands of tiny torches. What a magical place this is, maybe we should stay here for another day. Yes, let’s do that!
