    Leaving St.Augustine

Thursday 14 Jun: Leaving St.Augustine, Florida for Savannah, Georgia
Time to say good bye to the very pretty town of St.Augustine. Before breakfast we flew the drone over the Castillo de San Marcos fort and to the Lions Bridge, to get one last glimpse at them. Just as it was hovering over the swing bridge, it opened for a large motor cruiser to pass through … so Glen flew the (unregistered!) drone through the bridge and up over the cruiser! Catch me if you can, he says! Then after a quick check on decks and inside, we are ready to leave.
At 9.30am we up-anchor and exit the channel following our previous track. A bit easier in daylight and certainly reassuring. We have a full day journey ahead, with estimated arrival tomorrow morning.
Wind is very low, only 9-10kts, but sails are out anyway. Hurray, we are sailing again! It doesn’t last long though, as at midday the wind dies to nothing and we switch on engine power.
The most exciting activity of the afternoon was hunting flies with elastic bands. It’s Glen’s secret skill, acquired in his childhood. No matter how many he gets, there are always some more revealing themselves. Very annoying, but very entertaining for Glen. We wonder where on earth are they coming from?
Dark clouds were coming our way mid-afternoon but they dispersed before they got to us, thank goodness. We welcome them as such, covering the sun which was heating us and the cockpit.
At 5.30pm we are in line with the Florida-Georgia border. We are officially crossing into the next area to explore.
Uneventful afternoon till before sunset, when we are joined by pods of dolphins several times. Very playful on our bow wave and performing jumps alongside the boat. Magnificent creatures.
At sunset some thunderstorm clouds surround us, and with them comes rain and some wind. Sails out, fingers crossed the wind will last. Again, we have the same issue with the propeller, not folding properly. After few unsuccessful attempts, we do the same trick as last time: sails away and reverse at full blast. It works again. Hm, what is wrong with our prop? This is getting annoying.
The sun appears momentarily below dark clouds, in a deep red glow, as a grand finale, and then disappears again behind clouds just before it sets.
The wind stays with up all evening and into the night. A lovely broad reach at 7-8 kts. Lovely way to end the day.

About us

About us

Sail Cloudy Bay

Hi there! We are Glen & Oana, restless spirits with travel and adventure in our hearts. In mid-2016 we decided to put an end to our working days, and travel the world. And what better way to do it, if not sailing! We are aspiring to complete a circumnavigation, and this is our blog where we try to keep a record of our adventures. We live on s/v Cloudy Bay (and sometimes in Bucharest), have a long list of places to sail to, and we like coffee and good cocktails.
