Wednesday 20 Nov, HHN day 40: Shops again in the morning then all hands on deck to set up the new PC in the afternoon.
We head off back to Walmart to return some items then pop into the wonderful Harris Teeter supermarket. Wow! Why didn’t we come here first? It seems such good quality. A bit expensive, but once armed with their VIC card, their discounts were great. We buy all sorts of little goodies, like fresh Sushi even!
On the way back we pop into Free State Yachts where Liz announces that the new PC has arrived. 30 hours after ordering. Just love Amazon. Now lets hope it all works OK.
From this moment onward I have my IT hat fully on and set to work initializing then setting up the new laptop which includes adding anti-virus, MS Office Suite, and lots and lots of other software that was on my previous PC. At the same time the PC is busy getting updates from Windows10 and Dell. The Bits, Bytes and Gigabytes are flying everywhere! Some software is tricky – like the one from SailMail which controls the SSB HQ Radio. Very important to get this setup right and test the radio does actually receive GRIB files. Once away from this lovely internet getting any of this done will be impossible. Such is the modern world.
One rather spooky thing: minutes from the initial power up, my old screen saver (a photo of Cloudy) appeared on the screen! How on earth did that happen? It really does feel like big brother sometimes.
Meanwhile Oana is in full swing updating her provisions files with the new shopping and then doing all the stowing. At first the saloon is literally covered in food goods, and gradually the mess cleans up and the cupboards fill up. This is certainly the biggest stock up which we have done to date. Its actually nice to be in the cabin working beside Oana. These last weeks we have hardly been near each other as I was doing jobs and she was in the warmth cleaning and doing her battle with the mildew!
Finally, by late evening, the PC is up and running and I’m rather pleased with myself. Goodness knows what it would have cost to get the local IT shop to do the same. Fingers crossed that I now have all the programs and functionality that I had before my last PC died.
As we go to bed, we decide that with the PC “done”, we have nothing to hold us from leaving. We look at the weather and plan to leave early Saturday morning.
