Mast head and hydraulic systems, again

    by Glen October 31, 2020
    written by Glen

Saturday 31 Oct, HHN, boat winterizing day 31:
Not a lot accomplished today, hence this will be a very short blog. I meant to get started on the generator whose heat-exchanger has a water leak, but it didn’t happen.

In the morning, I make a template for the top of the mast head. The aluminum is quite corroded on top where various electricians had placed stainless fittings direct to the aluminum. I want to protect it, plus I want to keep rain from going down the center of the mast, as it does right now. For a moment I wonder if it may actually be an advantage for rain to wash down through the mast. Maybe it’s like that to clean out salt? Anyway, I proceed with the template while pondering this. Ray will take the carboard template and make me up the same shape but of glass-fibre. While doing this, I attempt to remove the Windex bolt, but it just shears off. Yes, corrosion again. Luckily, I do have a spare one, and next time it will be secured to the glass-fibre cover, not to the aluminum.

In the afternoon, using the data sheets which Selden have sent me for the hydraulic systems, plus my newly compiled “required parts list”, I take my PC and micrometer out on deck and double check each and every bearing and oil seal size against the Selden list and my own. All good except for one O-ring. At first, I think it’s my mistake, but then I realize it’s a mistake in the Selden parts list. This particular O-ring needs to go around a 100mm holder, but the O-ring size they show is only 88mm. I’ll have to correct their documentation for them! Once I’m happy with my list, I email it to HR-Parts in Sweden, and also the rigging company here, requesting prices from both. Nothing like a bit of competition eh?

While eating dinner, I start to watch a movie. I meant to start on the generator after dinner but ended up watching “Deer Hunter” right to the end. Damn, it was a 3 hours movie! So, you see, I did manage to avoid the generator for another day!

About us

About us

Sail Cloudy Bay

Hi there! We are Glen & Oana, restless spirits with travel and adventure in our hearts. In mid-2016 we decided to put an end to our working days, and travel the world. And what better way to do it, if not sailing! We are aspiring to complete a circumnavigation, and this is our blog where we try to keep a record of our adventures. We live on s/v Cloudy Bay (and sometimes in Bucharest), have a long list of places to sail to, and we like coffee and good cocktails.
