Thursday 9 Aug: Boothbay Harbor, Maine.
Rained most of the night. And forecast to rain most of today too. Glen had a night filled with images from the movie last night. Having worked many years on offshore rigs a lot of what he saw was close to his own various experiences, especially the incessant drive from the oil company reps that often led to extremely dangerous events – like the sinking of the SeaCrest, a neighboring rig in Thailand where 99 people were lost.
We have breakfast cozily inside the saloon and ponder heading off to get some food in. The fridge is bare!
While waiting for the rain to stop, fog to lift and sun to come out, Glen goes into the engine room with his new endoscope toy, to check the underside of all equipments. No major new drama-discoveries, only some rust stains under the water heater. Then it’s time to start generator to charge batteries, and fingers crossed exhaust fumes will not come into the engine room after he discovered last night an issue with the manifold securing bolts.
Then Glen keeps himself entertained replacing the old Hella fans with the new ones, Sirroco II from Caframo. They are much smoother and quieter. Now we can actually hear each other when the fans are on!
At mid-day we are admined-out and we take Pony (the shopping trolley) out to go to the supermarket. Quite far from where we are moored, but we need fruits, veggies and milk. And some goodies, to cheer us up when yet something else will need fixing on Cloudy Bay! Pony is jammed-packed when we finish with our shopping list, and we return to the boat for a late lunch.
In the evening we go ashore again, to explore the other side of the bay, where we find several cooperatives selling lobster, and yet more restaurants. After a bit of walking we stop for a beer at Boathouse Bistro, which seemed to be a popular place. Later we come across the town’s band, which was playing in front of the Memorial Library. After few marches and patriotic tunes, we return to our dinghy and then to Cloudy Bay.
Another relatively early evening to bed, we are still suffering from the jet-lag.
