Tuesday 25 September: Rainy cold day in Huntington, and guest arrives.
We wake up with rain patter on the decks and wind howling through the rigging. The forecast shows rain all day. If we were on our own it would be a snug-in-the-cabin day. But not a good day for Alex to arrive.
We spend the morning with small admin tasks: online orders, emails, banking, and last cleaning touches before our guest’s arrival. And more calls to US Coast Guard to check on the latest mariners notices for restrictions on East River traffic. It is now confirmed we may only go down the East side of Roosevelt Island, under the Roosevelt Bridge. Which we need to give notice to, to lift for our arrival. It will be interesting to see how that will work, since we can’t find a phone number for it, so our notice will be only once we get in VHF range.
The internet antenna played up today, we couldn’t see it on the laptop. How can it fail only few weeks after we had it installed? So Glen climbs the davit to have a look at it, if maybe rain got into the connection. Noting obvious there. After a bit of wiggling seems to be fine again. Fingers crossed it will stay this way!
Alex (Glen’s son) shows up just before mid-day, after a long journey and quite a few means of transport. It’s great to have him onboard again. So we spend few hours chatting and catching up on what he has been up to since we last saw him in August. And making plans on what we should visit tomorrow in NYC.
It’s been raining all day, not giving us a break to go to town for the afternoon or evening. The dinghy ride would’ve been very wet! All day onboard, and chatting about the frustrations of being grounded on the boat, led to the usual IT and internet issues. At which point having a technology savvy guest comes in handy, as Alex enlightens us on several issues: how to make our laptop a hotspot while on WiFi, order a cable for the radio so that we bluetooth the phone directly into the boat speakers, etc. All the things we learn from the youngsters! 🙂
After being introduced to Netflix, we have cinema evening and we watch “Lincoln”. A very interesting movie, from which we learn a bit more about the history of USA. A lot of what we saw in the southern states now fits into place historically.
Then it’s early to bed for Alex, while we book tickets for tomorrow’s trip to NYC. Fingers crossed it will be drier than today! We get to bed to the continued sound of rain on the decks.
